Fingal was set up as a result of the Local Government Act 1993, which dissolved Dublin County Council and created 3 new Local Authorities: Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin. The region takes its name from the Irish "Fine Gall" meaning "fair-haired foreigner".
According to the census in 2006, the official population of Fingal has grown dramatically to just under 240,000. 43,579 more people live in Fingal now than in 2002, a growth rate of 22.2% in just 4 years.
Fingal is officially Ireland's fastest growing county and the area of Dublin undergoing the greatest expansion. It now makes up 5.6% of the national population.
Fingal remains Ireland's youngest county with the average age of its resident being 32.2 years old, much younger than the present national average of 35.6.
