Eva And Constance Gore-Booth

Between 1904 when 'Ulysses' is set and 1922 when it is published, Ireland sees a lot of changes such as the fight for Home Rule, the first world war, the 1916 rising and the war of independence. It is during this time that Countess Markivick comes to the fore of Irish Politics. On meeting Arthur Griffith in Dublin she became interested in Irish politics and was instrumental in women's nationalism in Ireland. She played an active role in the 1916 rising and was the first woman ever elected to Westminster. The Countess was never ordinary, but she did become a hero to many for her part in the rising and the subsequent establishment of the Irish State.
