Maria Edgeworth wrote several books prior to writing her most famous work 'Castle Rackrent', published in 1800. 'Letters for Literary Ladies' was her first work, a didactic but well intentioned plea for women's education. This was a subject close to her father's heart, who believed that people of all creeds and gender should be entitled to an education. He strongly felt that women should be involved in estate management and he felt education was vitally important to all in society. He was appointed in 1806 to the Commission enquiring into the National School system in Ireland. In this way, Maria's father passed to her much of his principles and ideals. Maria Edgeworth, throughout her works of fiction or non fiction, drew heavily on the political and historical situation of the time, trying to educate and inform to create a better society for all.
