Newmills Corn and Flax Mill

The Newman Corn and Flax Mill are a restored complex of industrial buildings including one of the largest operating water wheels in the country. In 1986, the mills were acquired by the state for protection as a national monument. The Office of Public Works and Irish and international helpers restored the mills and millrace in 1989.Corn and flax milling were important parts of the agricultual economy of Ulster before they were superceded by modern industries. Visitors can witness the drying process, the mechanised process of milling and the operation of the original machines driven by hydro power.
