Inishkea

The islands of Inishkea off the south west coast of the Mullet Peninsula were inhabited up to the late 1920s. Prior to that they were home to a thriving fishing community but were deserted shortly after a drowning tragedy in 1927 which claimed the lives of ten fishermen. They are important now for the richness of their bird and plant life. In 1884 a team of reporters from "The Graphic" visited the islands and published a series of sketches, some of which are reproduced here.
