Shanganagh Castle

A late eighteenth century house, which was greatly remodelled in 1818 by its owner, Sir George Cockburn. He was a general in the Napoleonic wars and a collector of antiquities. Its more recent history has included housing the Department of Justice's open prison.

This house which the above print shows with an impressive garden front was built around 1840 and demolished in 1984. Its garden overlooked Scotsman's Bay and was topped off with an artificial hill with a statue of a sailor, or Neptune. It later functioned as a convent.
