Freeman of Waterford City

In 1979 John Treacy joined a select few, becoming a freeman of the City of Waterford - as Waterford's supreme athlete.

He was the first sportsman to receive this honour. The then mayor Councillor Stephen Rogers presented him with the casket containing the scroll of honour award, which he signed and which is now kept in the Waterford City Archives.

He was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Waterford Institute of Technology.
