Lough Easkey is a number of miles inland of Easkey village amid the Ox mountains. The lake is on the Lough Easkey Loop Walk, a route crossing bogland over back roads, lanes and tracks through the Ox Mountains. Easkey village is situated on the Co. Sligo coast approximate 15 miles from Ballina, Co. Mayo and 26 miles from Sligo.

The name Easkey comes from the Irish ‘Iascaigh, meaning "abounding in fish.” The area is scenic and attracts tourists and plays host to surfing championships. The River Easkey which rises in Lough Easkey attracts salmon and trout anglers. The lake itself is also a fishing location. There is much forestry in the locality.
