Members of the Donegal Ulster-Scots project team
These are the young people who collected and published a dictionary of Ulster-Scots words as used in their locality. They are from the Laggan towns of St Johnston and Carrigans, Co Donegal. They were assisted in their project by Donegal County Library's Taobh Tire staff, and local Ulster-Scots specialist Ian McCracken.

A Scottish Border Reiver cavalryman
Colour photograph of a man dressed in the uniform of a Scottish Border Reiver cavalryman. He is wearing a tunic of mail, a metal helmet and woollen trousers tucked into boots. He is carrying a long pike and a sword.As soldiers, the Border Reivers were considered among the finest light cavalry in Europe. They can be traced back to the twelfth century. Renowned for guerrilla-type tactics, many Reivers served as mercenaries in English and Scots armies in Ireland, and during the fortification of Ulster during the seventeenth century Plantation. Typical Reiver surnames still prominent in Ulster are Armstrong, Beattie, Elliot, Graham, Nixon and Scott.

Quirinale Palace, Rome
Photograph of Quirinale Palace, Rome. This was the summer residence of Pope Paul V, and here the Ulster earls had an audience with him in May of 1608. However, they were unable to obtain his help and influence in getting them to Spain.

The Ulster earls and their entourage arrive at the small French port of Quilleboeuf, France, September 1607. The Earl of Tirconaill is pictured in a red cloak; the earl of Tyrone is to his right, in a blue cloak. Steel sculpture of Red Hugh O'Donnell
Artist Maurice Harron's steel sculpture of Red Hugh O'Donnell on horseback. The sculpture is located in the Curlew Mountains of Co Roscommon. On this site Red Hugh defeated an English army under Sir Conyers Clifford in 1599, the last clear victory by an Irish army over the English. Following this, Elizabeth I, in rage, gathered together three armies to send to Munster, resulting in the final defeat of Red Hugh and his ally Hugh O'Neill at Kinsale, 1601

Hand-drawn map outlining the route taken by Red Hugh O'Donnell and his army en route to Kinsale. He travelled from his castle of Donegal to Ballymote, Co Sligo, then through the Burke, O'Connor, and O'Byrne territories of the south before taking up battle position against the English forces at the battle of Kinsale, Co Cork, 1601.

Sign at the site of the Battle of Kinsale
Signpost at Ballyegan, Co Cork, the site of the Battle of Kinsale, 1601. Their defeat at this place contributed to the decision of the Ulster earls to seek further military aid from Spain. When this failed, they left Ireland for exile on the continent in 1607.

Daniel O'Connell was often known as 'the Liberator' or 'the Emancipator'. He was famous for encouraging non-violent forms of resistance. He led the campaign for Catholic Emancipation.

Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891)
A portrait of Charles Stewart Parnell in 1880. Parnell was one of the great political leaders in Irish history. He was actively involved in the campaign for Home Rule as well as being President of the Land League. His political career fell apart after it was revealed that he had been having an affair with a married woman, Katharine O'Shea.

Emigrant Ship 1850
Illustration of a typical Emigrant ship, similar to the "Lady Peel" featuring three tall masts. This ship dates from the 1850 period and had accommodation for various classes of passenger from respectable to steerage. Among the passengers would have been a number of female emigrants and even children from Workhouses would typically have travelled on such ships to Australia in the Nineteenth Century. Their passage would have been paid from charitable funds raised among the local gentry. The illustration depicts a ship of about 1,000 tons.
