Sentinel - Advertisement for Schoolmaster & Mistress 13 Jan 1844
Extract from the "Carlow Sentinel" newspaper of January 13th 1844 seeking applications for the posts of Schoolmaster and Schoolmistress in Carlow Union Workhouse. These were the first appointments to these positions. The Schoolmaster/Schoolmistress were required to assist the Master and Matron in the daily routine of the Workhouse as well as their own duties. The Schoolmaster would be paid £25 per annum and the Mistress £15 per annum. They would also be provided with an apartment each as well as coals, candles and officers rations. The advertisement was signed by Robert Davies, Clerk of the Union on 10th January 1844.

Dunshaughlin Fever Hospital
The fever hospital was built in 1847 to accommodate those suffering from illnesses such as dysentery, cholera and general fevers. Numbers seeking admission to the house increased during the famine years straining resources. The ruins of the hospital are located at the rear of the workhouse.

At the Guardians' meeting of 21st of May, 1841 the clerk reported the provisional admission of two destitute persons, a man and a woman. Bread and milk were supplied. The master, matron and porter also took up residence in the workhouse on the 17th of May, 1841.

The Grand Jury was the most important local body in rural Ireland during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They were empowered to raise money by means of the county rates. They were responsible for the construction of roads and bridges and the upkeep of the lunatic asylums and hospitals. Members of the Grand Jury were selected by the High Sheriff from the leading property owners in the county. In this cover detail from Grand Jury Presentments for 1860 we can see several well-known names from the landed gentry of County Carlow.

Dunshaughlin Poor Law Union - 24.11.1849 - Cholera Physician Payment
This invoice refers specifically to the cholera and sanitory account which the Guardians set up to pay a designated cholera physician. He was employed to cope with this disease which became prevalent in late 1849. Here a payment of £40 or €50 to Doctor Byrne is recorded. In this week there were 80 patients in the fever hospital.

An Advertisement regarding the election of Clerk of Carlow Poor Law Union to be held on 10th December 1840. The advertisement was published in the Carlow Sentinel 21st November 1840. The salary for this office was £40 in the first year of office. Candidates had to supply two sureties in the sum of £100 each. Applications were to be addressed to Colonel Bruen of Oak Park.
