Nib and pot
This is what was used for writing before ballpoint pens. The nib/point of the pen was dipped into the pot that would be filled with ink. Students wrote with this as we do on a page, but they would have to repeat this process of dipping the nib into the pot regularly. Today we have ballpoint pens filled with ink, which allows the ink to flow while we are writing.
