The pupils are presented with a timeline stating what part of the century we will be concentrating on.
 

1714:


Christopher Meldon ran a hedge school in Baldoyle near Raheny.
 

Further on in the study:


1. An information page that provides general information about the penal laws and hedge schools and explains why Christopher Meldon was imprisoned for teaching.

2. A detective game. The objectives of this activity are to enable pupils to:

  • examine a pictorial source of a hedge master and his pupils in the 18th century,
  • read four sentences about hedge schools in the 18th century,
  • Each one of the four sentences is linked to a hot spot section with in the evidence.

1773:


Earliest known record for Raheny Parochial School (Church of Ireland Parish School).

The pupils continue through to 1773. Raheny Parochial School taught only one subject - English. This piece of information affords an opportunity to spark a discussion and examination of British rule at this time and efforts to proselytise and anglicise the Irish.
 

1787:


Construction of a 'new' Church of Ireland Parochial School, which became known as Dick's Charity School.

The pupils continue through to 1787. The information associated with 1787 affords an opportunity to spark a discussion and examination of funding for schools at this time, namely that the government did not provide financial support for education. The 1787 page is linked to:

1. An information page that provides additional information and visuals relating to Samuel Dick and his relationship with Raheny parish.

2. A spot the difference activity. The objectives of this activity are to enable pupils to:

Examine two pictorial sources

  • a picture of Samuel Dick's Charity School c. 1870
  • a picture of Samuel Dick's Charity School today. The building is no longer used as a school, but still survives.

Identify aspects of the buildings which:

  • are the same today,
  • would only have been seen long ago,
  • would only be seen today.
  • visually communicate their observations by choosing the correct multiple choice answer.

3. A Location game. The pupils are required to help a tourist find his/her way to the present day location of Samuel Dick's Charity School, Edenmore House and Crescent Cottages, by clicking on the correct part of a map. The objectives of this activity are to enable pupils to:

  • examine a location map of Raheny
  • use a key to identify the correct current location of Samuel Dick's Charity School and Crescent Cottages.
