20th Century

1901:

Rose Tucker is local girl from Raheny and documents from the period reveal information about her life.

1. A detective game. The pupils are presented with

a) a census form from 1901 and a serious of multiple-choice questions, which aim to focus their examination of the document,

b) a school register from Raheny Schools in 1891. It lists Rosie Tucker as one of its pupils. The children are then asked to consider what these documents do not tell us about Rose Tucker e.g. What she looked like? Did she like school? Who were her friends?

The objective of this activity is to enable pupils to:

  • purposefully examine two pieces of written evidence. See Media Bank.

1943:

Sylvia Taylor was 5 years old and lived in Raheny. She talks about her experiences of school in 1943.

Throughout this section there are many opportunities for the child to listen to audio evidence of what school was like when Sylvia was young, click on the button to listen. Children are to write in their copy book for any questions asked within this section.

1. The topic 'Clothes' links to a detective game. The pupils are presented with a series of written extracts and pictures, taken from Irish advertisements c. 1930s/1940s. See Media Bank.

2. A page of topics relating to school. When the pupils select a topic, they view a short media file and listen to a section of an interview (oral evidence) conducted with Sylvia Taylor in 2005.

As the child listens they will be writing in their copy book things that they hear that are either the same as what they learn at school or not the same.

1955:

Raheny National School (Roman Catholic School) is replaced by Scoil Íde.

1. A location game. The pupils are required to help a tourist find his/her way to the All Saint's Church, by clicking on the correct part of a map. The objectives of this activity are to enable pupils to:

  • examine a location map of Raheny,
  • use a key to identify the correct location of All Saint's Church, which is located near Scoil íde.
