Useful sources found locally:

  • Pictures and drawings found in old books.
  • Old pictures from home.
  • Pictures of local buildings sourced from libraries, museums and local historians.
  • Maps of the locality from different eras, sourced from local libraries, can be compared and contrasted, integrated with Geography.
     
Using pictorial sources:

  • Pictures can be presented divided in sections and pupils can be asked to match or construct a statement for each section.
  • Speech bubbles can be placed over pictures of people and pupils can be asked to write a sentence that depicts what the person was thinking when the picture was taken.
  • Venn diagrams can be used and pupils can place sections of copied pictures into then, now, same sections of diagram, communicating their ideas visually.

Using oral evidence:

  • Pupils can plan, conduct and share interviews with the class and these types of activities present opportunities for learning that move away from traditional methods of teaching history
