  • Blanchardstown Through Time

Blanchardstown is located close to the M50 and to the Navan Road. The M50 is a major motorway and the busiest road in Ireland. When the M50 Blanchardstown roundabout was being built during the early 1990s, the existing railroad track and the waterways - including the Royal Canal and the Rivers Tolka and Liffey - had to be included in the design. The result is a unique engineering achievement, with a series of bridges and viaducts incorporated into the overall design of the roundabout.

To make way for the M50, some old buildings had to be demolished. The old Blanchardstown Railway Station was one of them. Work on the railway in the Blanchardstown area began in 1846. The popularity of the railway as a form of transport eventually led to the decline in use of the Royal Canal.

The old Blanchardstown Station was replaced by the new Castleknock Station, which is located between Blanchardstown and Castleknock villages. It is known locally as Laurel Lodge Station, as it is located on the edge of the area of Castleknock known as Laurel Lodge.
