Image courtesy of Tipperary Joint Libraries.Pierce McCan was born in Wexford in 1882, but spent his childhood in Ballyowen, Dualla, Co. Tipperary. He was the second eldset of four boys. His early education began at home, and was with the family's private tutor. He later attended Clongowes Wood College in Co. Kildare.
Young Pierce was interested in crafts. He was a strong swimmer and was rewarded for saving one person's life and attempting to rescue another. He was also an accomplished horse rider.
