During the 18th century, cannons were named according to the weight of ammunition they fired.  An "18 pounder" was a cannon which fired ammunition 18 pounds (about 8 kg.) in weight.  A "24 pounder" fired ammunition which weighed 24 pounds (about 11 kg.) and so on.  The ammunition was made from iron.
