Carrauntoohil, the highest peak in Ireland, is part of the Macgillycuddy Reeks in Co. Kerry. The local rock is Old Red Sandstone from the Devonian period. The slopes of the Reeks display many of the features associated with a glaciated landscape; corries, U-shaped valleys, and hanging valleys. However, the actual peaks may, according to some researchers, have protruded above the ice.
