The name Granuaile is thought to come from the Irish 'Gráinne Mhaol' meaning 'Bald Grace'.  Legend has it that Grace O'Malley earned this nickname when she cut off her hair so that she could go on a sea voyage with her father.  He had told her that she couldn't make the voyage as her long hair would get caught in the ship's ropes.
