Handwritten poem by Padraig Colum. Padraig Colum, like many of the literary figures in the early twentieth century was interested in politics as much as literature. His early dramatic works focuses on Irish political issues of the time, such as the land question, and Irish representation of nationality. Colum was a close friend of Thomas MacDonagh, a prominent Irish nationalist, and was a militant nationalist, taking part in the Howth Gun Running of 1914. Colum's play 'On Broken Soil' was produced in 1903 by the Irish National Theatre Society, which was to go on to form the Abbey Theatre.  However, he is more famous for his wide range of poetry and children's books, the latter of which showed his keen interest in mythology.
