Iona is located the Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland. It is considered a very important place in the history of Christianity, largely due to Colmcille. Because of this, Iona became an important place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages. Many kings chose it as their burial place, especially kings of Scotland, but also kings of Ireland, Norway and France.
The abbey on Iona was built in the Middle Ages and is still in use as a church. It is in extremely good condition. The well-preserved remains of a medieval nunnery also exist on the island.
A community of Christians known as the Iona Community now lives on the island, continuing the traditions of prayer and pilgrimage. This community focuses on social justice and peace.
