A privateer was a private ship commissioned by a government for use in war. The role of the privateer was to capture ships belonging to the enemy, especially ships carrying valuable goods. Privateers were common from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Those engaged in the practice were often treated as pirates and criminalised if caught by the enemy of the government for which they were working. Privateering was abolished by international agreement in the late 1800s.
