The Pulham rock feature was a creation by James Pulham, a well-renown landscape gardener of the 19^th century. Pulham and his son specialised in creating rock gardens from both artificial and natural rocks, which they skilfully blended together to create the impression of a completely natural garden.

The substance they created to blend the rocks together was called Pulhamite. They did not pass on his skill, and so key to the Pulhamite blend remains a mystery to this day.
