Richard Lowell Edgeworth was a very interesting and colourful man. Born in England, 1744, he came to Edgeworthstown at the age of three. He was educated at Trinity and Oxford, and had many interests on leaving formal education. He was known as an educationalist, a politician and as an inventor, with a particular fascination with telegraphy and carriage construction. On his return home to Edgeworthstown from Oxford he renovated the house and included in it a number of his inventions. He was a progressive landlord and it is said he constantly sought to improve conditions for his tenants, often at his own cost. In addition he tried to encourage other landlords to do the same.
