Robert Mallet (1810-81) conducted pioneering experiments by detonating explosions at Killiney beach and measuring the time taken for the shockwaves to travel through the rock and sand.  Following the catastrophic Naples earthquake of 1857, he conducted the first scientific analysis of an earthquake site: analysing how buildings fell, Mallet concluded that the cause was a series of shockwaves from a focus point deep beneath the surface.
