This is the simplest test.

Moisten each soil sample with a little water. Then rub it between your fingers and describe what it feels like. If it feels very sticky it is made up of clay. Clay soils are difficult to plough. They are very heavy because they absorb water. They often are very wet and plants find it hard to grow in them.
