The Banner County

The tradition of carrying banners goes back a long way in Co. Clare.  It is thought that the followers of Brian Boru (see 'Clare People') carried banners at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.  During the 1800s, banners were carried to the many political meetings concerning Catholic Emancipation and the Land War which took place in the county.  Politicians and other important visitors were greeted by crowds carrying banners.
