The Penal Laws

The Penal Laws were introduced in 1695, imposed by the British Government. The aim was to discriminate against Roman Catholics in Ireland. This was done by banning mixed marriages, excluding Catholics from holding positions in public offices, banning them from holding firearms, excluding them from voting and banning them from teaching in schools. The laws were upheld until 1778, after which political unrest began to bring about new changes.
