The Undercroft, Dublin Castle
The Undercroft, Dublin Castle
An undercroft is a cellar or underground room, often brick-lined and vaulted, and used for storage in buildings since medieval times.
The butt of the Powder Tower is visible at the Undercroft in Dublin Castle. It contains part of the Viking town defence bank. Archaeologists were able to tell that this was part of the Viking town defence bank by the materials they found there.

The Undercroft at Dublin Castle features the remains of the 13th century Powder Tower where gunpowder was stored. There are also stone steps cut through the medieval stone wall. These steps allowed access to the Castle from the narrow moate surrounding the Castle.
