A barony is a sub-division of a county. Some baronies cross the boundaries of counties, and these are called half baronies. Irish baronies were generally defined during the Anglo-Norman and later English conquests of Ireland. However, some baronies mirror earlier territories associated with Gaelic chieftains. There are 331 baronies in Ireland, but they are no longer used for local government.
