National Library of Ireland

The National Library holds a large number of sources relevant for family history research. These include Catholic Parish Registers, Griffith ’s Valuation, Tithe Applotment Books, trade and social directories, regional and national newspapers, and published family histories as well as collections of estate papers and Genealogical Office Manuscripts. The Library also provides on-site access to a number of e-resources which are useful for family history research.

The Library’s free Genealogy Advisory Service is located in its main building on Kildare Street . Library staff are on hand to provide advice to personal callers starting their research as well as researchers at a more advanced stage. The Service is open Monday – Wednesday 9.30am – 5pm and Thursday - Friday 9.30am to 4.45pm and no appointment is necessary. The Genealogy Advisory Service also holds a number of reference books, catalogues and other useful finding aids which are available on a self-service basis on Monday - Friday 9.30am - 4.45pm
