Monaghan County Museum

Monaghan County Museum opened in 1974 and was the first local authority funded museum of its kind in the Republic of Ireland and has since won two museum awards  - the Council of Europe Museum Prize 1980 and Gulbenkian-Norwich Union Award for Best Collections Care 1993. The museum was originally located in the courthouse but following a fire in 1981, the rescued collection was displayed on Hill Street. Following the restoration of the courthouse building the museum returned in 1990.
