Ocean Energy

Electricity can be generated on a renewable basis from the oceans through harnessing ocean waves, tidal power and differences in salinity and temperatures.

Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is based on the temperature differences between warm water, which is stored at the ocean’s surface and heated by the sun, and cooler water which lies in deeper ocean waters. This form of energy generation is usually limited to warmer, tropical climates such as countries like Hawaii.

Salinity gradient power or osmotic power relies on the differences in salt concentration between seawater and river water which is obtained through the process of osmosis. The most effective renewable energy harnessed from the ocean however comes in the in form of tidal power or wave energy.
