The End of Lent
Lent ends on Holy Thursday, and is followed by Good Friday, which marks the death of Jesus in the Christian Church. According to Catholic doctrine, no meat or alcohol can be consumed on this day; in Ireland, controversially, public houses remain closed on Good Friday.
While Easter remains a significant festival, it is largely religious. Halloween and Christmas are perhaps the most vibrant contemporary folk festivals, and both are marked by folklore’s two key calling cards: tradition and innovation.
