Medieval period church bell
Medieval period church bell
Medieval period bronze hand bell, quadrangular in shape, of a type associated with the early Irish church.. The bell was regarded as one of the insignia of clerics and abbots of the medieval church in Ireland. This example was part of the collections of the Royal Irish Academy catalogued in the 1850’s by Sir William Wilde, father of Oscar Wilde. Its find place is unknown which is often the case with 19th century acquisitions, a time when les attention was paid to the scientific detail of find circumstance. Many of the bells that have survived in museum collections are associated with individual saints, for example Saint Patrick or Saint Ruadain. Some were enshrined in ornate bell shrines such as that of St Senan of Scattery Island, Co Clare featured elsewhere on this site.
