Bust of Minerva, The Godess of Battle
Bust of Minerva, The Godess of Battle
This Colossal Bust was present to Col. Lawrence by Canova the great Italian Sculptor and arrived at Lawrencetown, from Italy, during the visit, of this Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales (afterwards George the Fourth) between the years 1780 and 1790. "For over one hundred years these noble marbles have found an Asylum within the historic walls of one of the finest mansions to be met with in the West of Ireland they still occupy the room in which they were first placed and first met the eye of England's Prince (George the Fourth) they have outlived the revolutions of time, the fall of ancient dynasties, the dismemberment of mighty empires and the vicissitudes of family fortune, apart from their historic associations they stand forth this day in all their primeval and untarnished beauty, the all but living creation of the Sculptors Chisel; we have met with the Continent. In taking our leave of these priceless gems of Italian art, we can confidently commend them to the careful study of the visitor; there is an attractive beauty, and an expression of intellectual power which must ever charm and fascinate him". Transcribed from the Lawrence Family Album.
