Skipping Rhymes

Skipping is a game that has been played worldwide for centuries. In many places, including Donegal, special skipping rhymes developed over time. They are sung while the game is taking place, often in sync with the rhythm of the rope swing.

Here is an example of a Donegal version of one of the most famous skipping songs:

'All in together, girls!

This fine weather, girls!

When I count your birthday,

Please jump out.

January, February, March, etc.'

Those whose birthday month comes up must leave the rope. When the last girl is left, the children start counting and she must continue skipping until the date of her birthday is reached.
