The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) was established by the Irish government in 1990. It opened to the public in May 1991.

Its aim is to help cultivate an appreciation and understanding of the visual arts in Ireland. It does this through hosting exhibitions and through their own education programme. Over 400,000 people visit both the museum and events organised by IMMA each year.

IMMA is based in the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham. The Royal Hospital was founded in 1684 by James Butler, the Duke of Ormonde, as a home for injured or retired soldiers.

It carried on as a hospital for the next 250 years before falling into disrepair. However, in 1984, the government set about restoring the hospital to its previous condition.
