Free education

St. Anne's Catholic Day School for girls was set up after the Education Act of 1831. This piece of legislation provided funds to build schools and to pay teachers' salaries. So, all of a sudden, free primary education was introduced in Ireland.

This was a very important thing because it meant that young people from different backgrounds now had a greater opportunity to improve themselves.

A school for the northside

The Loreto Order of nuns set up the school on the Fair Green beside the St. Mary's Catholic Church.

At this time, there were no schools located on the North side of the town. Some children had to walk a couple of miles each way in all weathers to get to school.

However, in 1953 a new National School was opened attached to St. Anne's.
