County Carlow Military Museum
County Carlow Military Museum is situated in Carlow town at St. Dympna’s Hospital Church. It was founded in 1995, initially based at the FCA Headquarters in Carlow Town and opened in June 1996 before moving to its present location in 2001.
The Irish Defence Forces feature prominently among the displays. They include Irish Defence Forces uniforms, the Irish War of Independence and Civil War. Also featured are details of Irish United Nations peacekeeping missions in Congo, Lebanon and Somalia .
There is also a replica of a trench from World War I showing daily life for Irishmen who served in the British Army. Other displays feature the 8th Militia Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, the exploits of Carlow soldiers who served in global conflicts and armoured vehicle manufacturing in the 1940s. A new display is entitled ‘The Medieval Soldier.’
