Costs of Implementing
Creating a green building means matching the products and materials to the specific design and site in order to minimise the overall environmental impact. A green building may cost more up front, but savings will be made through lower operating costs over the life of the building. With uncertainty of supplies of fossil fuels and subsequent rising prices, the savings to be made from the installation of renewable or energy efficient technology are likely to increase. It is becoming more widely recognised that providing for ‘green building’ will be a necessity for the construction sector as demands from consumers and from government for such products increases.
An energy efficient house (with or without an alternative energy source) will primarily be of benefit to the homeowner. However, with increased awareness about the importance of the Building Energy Rating and the relevant policies and legislation, houses with a high BER are likely to come at a higher cost. Investment in energy efficient technologies, renewable energy sources and sustainable planning and design, although costing more to develop, will be more sought after and therefore result in more valuable homes and buildings.
