There are two types of squirrels in Ireland. They are the red squirrel and the grey squirrel. The red squirrel is Irish. The grey squirrel came here from North America.
Squirrels live in trees. The male squirrel builds a nest for his family. This is made from twigs, leaves, moss and bark. It is called a drey.
Squirrels love to eat nuts, acorns, pine seeds, fungi and berries. Squirrels do not hibernate during the winter. However, they still collect food for the winter and store it in hidden holes and hollows. Some squirrels are very forgetful. Sometimes they forget where they have hidden their food!
Have you ever seen a squirrel? What colour was it?
