Lamhán Sléibhe
Latin name: Ulmus glabra
The wych elm is a deciduous tree.
Early in the springtime, the purple-green flowers start to grow. They hang from the tree in small bunches.
After the flowers have grown, the leaves open out.
The leaves are green and have a jagged edge. They are oval and have a tip at the end.
The fruit of the wych elm look like flat paper circles. There is one seed inside each one.
Wych elms are often found growing in graveyards in Ireland. The Celts believed the wych elm protected the dead.
