The Northern Executive was established under the 1998 Northern Ireland Act to become the governing body in Northern Ireland. The Northern Executive officially took power in December 1999. The Executive is made up of a First Minister, a deputy First Minister and ten Departmental Ministers. The Northern Executive has been suspended a number of times, including a long suspension between 2002 and 2007.
