Fish are cold-blooded animals that live in water. Most fish have slimy skin that is covered in tiny scales. Fish come in all sorts of wonderful colours and shapes. For example, the prickly porcupine fish can scare away its enemies by gulping lots of water and blowing itself up like a big spiky balloon!

Did you ever wonder how fish can breathe under water? If you want to swim underwater, you have to take a deep breath and fill your lungs up with oxygen first. Fish don’t have to do this. They have special organs called ‘gills’ that take the dissolved oxygen straight out of the water. This allows fish to breathe underwater.
