Deserts cover more than one-fifth of the world's land. A Desert is any region that has less than 2.5 cm (10 inches) of rain or snow every year. Not all deserts are sandy. The polar regions are also called deserts because they have very little rain or snowfall. The world’s driest desert is the high Atacama plain in Chile. It is a bleak, rocky desert, which is so dry that virtually no animals or plants can survive there. The Atacama desert has been used by scientists to test robot rovers for exploring planets like Mars
