Transport
This exemplar is for a teacher- led lesson on transport in geography. It includes some whole class activities, individual work and pair work. Children can, individually or as a class, work through the first section of the Transport unit for third and fourth class level found on the Ask About Ireland site before or after this lesson.
Learning objectives :
- That children will understand what transport means
- That children will become familiar with different types of transport and the interaction between them
- They will see that different vehicles use different surfaces-sea, land, air
- That children will look in detail at road transport
- That children will be able to chose modes of transport best for different goods to travel by road
- They will consider why people move and why they move goods
Lesson Introduction:
Warm ups: Aim- To generate interest in transport.
a. Odd one out:
A) Place a selection of 3 types of transport on a chart or on the blackboard. One should be from water or air and two from land. Children as a group suggest the odd one out.
B) Give pairs of children some word lists based on transport. Children must explain why certain words are the odd one out. Feedback to the group.
Example handlebars, saddle, engine or harder such as cycle track, one-way street, pedestrian crossing and bus lane
b. Comparing Photographs urban /rural Airport/Port. Using an overhead projector or data projector or large pictures teacher shows contrasting categories of transport. Children are asked to compare the pictures for types of transport.
c. DVD CLIP -Give children a grid with a list of modes of transport. Tell them they will watch a short clip and at the end of it they will tick the types/modes of transport which they notices. Include walking.
d. Project images of transport using a data projector from the Ask About Ireland Transport unit or Leixlip Transport. Other images can be found on the media bank within this site. Play some of the audio clips from these which convey information about different modes of transport.
e. Brainstorming . Examination of a picture. Children list the transport which they notice. As children encounter more examples through the Ask About Ireland transport unit or through further class lessons they can add them their list.
