- Listening approach: Children listen to the stories in various ways- They can listen to (and see) a professional reading the stories by looking at videos of each story, through the teacher’s own telling of the story and /or an audio accompaniment with electronic book format of the story.
- Response through discussion: Children respond to the story through discussion. The discussion will focus on the following elements of the story: what is the story about, any common themes between stories, any interesting plot lines or surprising elements, what are the mini stories within the overall story, what purpose has number in the stories, words or phrases that are particularly colourful, striking or informative, are any parts of the stories or characters or actions exaggerated.
- Visual response: Children respond to the story through visual expression. The children could use various media to recreate key passages from the stories in a storyboard illustrating the sequence of events.
- Dramatic response: Children respond to key passages or mini stories by using dramatic elements i.e. one group could mime while another reads the passage while using a dramatic voice , use of conscience alley for key decisions made by main characters and freeze framing of key moments of the story. The children could also do a character analysis by interviewing characters by means of hot seating technique.
- Recalling the story: The children are asked to retell the story, focussing on the important passages. The story could be retold by children in a series of passages. The children describe their favourite characters and episodes of the story in which they featured prominently.
- Comparison of two stories: The children compare both stories to determine common elements such as those mentioned in 2.
- Summarise the story by using a plot tracking activity: This is where the children identify key moments or events of the story and summarise each of these. This provides a summary of the whole plot.
