While this unit covers some of the History and Science Curricula, the main emphasis of the unit is on the Geography Curriculum.

Explore, investigate and come to appreciate the major features of the built environment in the locality and in a contrasting part of Ireland.

The student will be enabled to:
- Explore, investigate and come to appreciate the major features of the built environment in the locality and in a contrasting part of Ireland.
- Location and uses of buildings
- Change, reconstruction and re-use of buildings
- Shape/layout of features in the area
- Natural environmental features and people
- Become aware of the natural features in the locality and in a contrasting part of Ireland and their relationship with the lives of people living in these places.
- Major natural features, flora and fauna
- Interrelationships of these features and the lives and work of the people
- Changes to the natural environment and their causes
- Transport and Communications
- Learn about the methods of transport and transport routes in the locality and in a contrasting area of Ireland
- Become aware of the advantages, disadvantages and roles of these methods

- Identify and investigate a widening range of common materials in the immediate environment:
- Water, Rock. Metal, Wood….
Strand: Environmental Awareness and Care
Strand Unit: Environmental Awareness
The student should be enabled to
- Identify positive aspects of natural and built environments through observation, discussion and recording
Strand unit: Caring for the Environment
The student should be enabled to
- Identify and discuss a local. environmental issue
- Come to appreciate individual, community and national responsibility for environmental care
- Appreciate the need to protect the environments for present and future inhabitants
