Grid References Example
Grid references are used to identify areas on a map. Three digits for easting and three for northing identify an area 100m x 100m on an Irish 1:50,000 map. Each grid square has two digits for easting and two for northing. Also, you divide each side of the grid square into ten steps - this gives you three numbers in the easting and three in the northing. In the picture the reference for the top of Scarr is 132-018. (c) Copyright Ordnance Survey Ireland

The National Grid
The National Grid system is used to enable one to give a location of anywhere in the country to the nearest 100m. The system uses Eastings (vertical) and Northings (horizontal)to pinpoint a location.

The national grid splits Ireland up into 5 x 5 = 25 grid squares. Each square has a letter of the alphabet ( the letter 'I' is omitted ).
Any point in Ireland can be identified by the grid-square letter followed by the six digits of easting and northing.
Why do you think the letter 'I' is not used ?
In which letter squares would you find Malin Head, Mizen Head, Slyne Head and Howth head ?
